C5 Registry Atlanta-Savannah-Daytona 2001

This year a gang of Registry members met up and caravanned to Savannah for a night of revelry on the way to the Rolex 24 hours at Daytona. A bunch came from Virginia, another bunch from Texas/Louisiana and my bunch from Atlanta.

NOTE: If you have pictures that would improve this story, please drop me an email by clicking HERE and I'll try to include them.

Tony Petrea (this guy) has been organizing this event in Savannah for three years now. Tony loves a good party and he throws a great one. This year the plan was to meet at Tony and Nancy's house in Savannah in the late afternoon of Thursday, February 2nd -- and we did -- and then we.... But I must digress..

Atlanta to Savannah

My gang met as usual at the Rio Bravo in Dunwoody on Wednesday night for food and libations. This was the largest turnout we had (about 40 folks):

Gotta love the shirtsleeves. Thank God for Atlanta in January...
Something about C5s in the fading afternoon light...
You know it's a good event when Gael shows up (on the right) talking to new Registry Members The Cains..
They weren't all red, y'know..
That's Mike Swiney (who drove all the way from Illinois to join us) holding forth to the multitude.
I guess the group has gotten just too big to take a good indoor picture at night.
..but that doesn't stop me from trying...
First arrivals at our rallying point on Thursday morning (the Quality Inn in Morrow, GA). The Grand Sport was unexpected but welcome. We ended up with 26 cars for the first leg of the Caravan to Tony's.

Funny how a bunch of Corvettes lined up looks pretty much like any other bunch of Corvettes lined up. But we keep taking that same picture, over and over and ...
Now for something really different. This is Bill Cooke's ride. Just about everything Breathless Performance sells is on his C5. I REALLY like the high-rise hood. Y'think if I hit Gael with the car again she'll spring for one of those? Hmmm...
Here's John Morrison and his co-pilot who drove from Michigan to join us. Something about an Atlanta-area C5 event, I guess...
Oh, the trials of leadership. This is Gary McCurdy who generously accepted the lead car position in the caravan in his Fairway Green 98. He did pretty well (more about the "pretty well" part later)..
OK! Finally time to go...

Here's our first scheduled stop. Greg and Denise McManus were joining up with us on I-16 between Macon and I-95 so we lined up on the entrance ramp at the meet-up exit and waited for them.

A few of us (ladies) noted there were no facilities of any kind at this exit so part/most of the group moved on to the next rest area.

Some of the rest of us (guys) chose to take advantage of the roadside brush for a bio break. That's how the McManuses received a rare view of me (not at my best (as it was chilly)) as they drove up.
