Greetings from Bowling Green, KY! Corvettes, Corvettes, Corvettes, Corvettes (how many was that?) Corvettes, Corvettes....Every color, year, condition and all with happy drivers!

Friday

Gael and I arrived early Friday morning and parked about ten cars down the line from the C5 Registry tent on Cafaro's Hill. Conveniently, I forgot to bring my cameras (left 'em in the hotel) and, not wanting to lose my excellent parking position, took no pix on Friday.

Lots were taken, though, and I'm sure others will put 'em up for you.

Weather report: Clear, HOT as HE** (hence the background color of this page!)

There were tons of members there and many new members signed up. The C5Registry tent was the largest one and was set up on Cafaro's Hill right beneath the NCM tower sign. By the end of the day we had two+ ranks of member C5s parked next to the sidewalk. About 50 cars...

Friday night many of us attended the first NCM Hall of Fame induction banquet. The food was, well, ... food ... but the comradery was terrific. There were 700 people there! Six men, central to the development of the Corvette and its success were inducted into the Corvette Hall of fame. They were:

Ed Cole, former President of GM and Chevrolet Chief Engineer
Zora Arkus-Dunov, first Corvette Chief Engineer
Harley Earl, GM Design Chief and father of the first Corvette
Bill Mitchell, GM Design Chief and successor to Harley Earl
Joe Pike, father of "Corvette News" and the National Council of Corvette Clubs
Larry Shinoda, along with Bill Mitchell, designer of the Corvette Sting Ray (63-67)

Saturday

Weather report: Clear, HOTTER than Friday

Today there were nearly 100 C5 Registry cars lined up in our reserved area!

Saturday was "picture-challenged" too because of the Cafaro seminar and C5 Registry shirt sales and new member signup. But I did get a couple...

Jim Browning (C5R# V0010) of Corsa Performance spent all
three days in the C5 Registry tent with us. We really
appreciated he and his guys being with us to answer just
about every exhaust question in the universe!
<
Jake Drennon (C5R# V0002) was moving so
fast signing up new members, answering
questions, looking for Dan, etc. that I
could only get a picture of his back.
Honest; he was facing me when I started
pressing the shutter...
For those who've not had the pleasure
of meeting him, this is Jeff Corbel (C5R#
W0315)
(the C5 wheel decal man). Lots of
demand for his great product.
Here are Gail and Dan Douglas (C5R# V0003).

Those on the C5NET will recognize
Dan as "datadan".
Here's a personal thrill. On the right
is John Cafaro (designer of the C5) after
he signed the hood of my car. Meeting
the guy responsible for the look of what
I think is one of the most beautiful cars
ever built was a real emotional high for
me.

Saturday night nearly 200 of us had dinner together (same place, better food) and had a great time! Jake told a great story that I wish we had on tape and Dan MCed the rest of the short program. And we were blessed by the presence of John Cafaro and his wife, Dave Hill and a half-dozen C5 Engineers. As well as folks from Ecklers, Corsa Performance and ProAuto Tech. Dan spoke movingly about the reaction we and others get from our cars and thanked John and Dave profusely for creating this great ride; Dave Hill got a standing ovation. What a great evening!

I heard Dave Hill say that this evening was "one of four or five best events of my professional life."

Ahhhh, but Sunday....

Weather report: Clear, EVEN HOTTER than Saturday

But at least I got some pictures.

First thing Sunday morning and the first
thing we saw when we arrived was Tim
Berry's (C5R# W0777) Aztec GOLD C5.

His car is #13 of only 15 built and that
tag, "13of15", is on order...
Here's Ron Bilyeu (C5R# V0049) giving his
talk on the LS1 Power Pak as he prepares
to install the device on Ross Hanson's C5.
Ron worked hard, sweating in the sun-
shine all day Friday and Saturday
installing PowerPaks on member's C5s.
On Sunday he got smart and starting doing
them INSIDE the C5 Registry tent!
Here's Ron signing the valve cover
on a member's Nassau Blue C5 after
installing the PowerPak. (If it's your
car, let me know and I'll put that
information here).
Ron enjoyed the paint pen so much
that he signed his own briefcase!
Here's Dan (C5R# V0001) eyeballing Wil
Cooksey, the Bowling Green plant manager.

Wil described his job to me as the "best
job in GM"!
Here's a better shot of Wil. He and I
used to be neighbors in Atlanta about
ten years ago. Small world...
Just so you don't think Wil is just one
more management wonk, THIS is his
dragster (one of two)!
There WERE some fantastic cars here
(besides ours, of course).

Here's my favorite. This is the Navy
color everyone's been talking about.
I think it's absolutely fantastic!

This one was set up for european
delivery.
This is a black fixed roof coupe (now
called the "hardtop"). It had the HUD
which, as you've heard, is awesome.
We know that C5 Registry members have
a lot in common. But what are the odds
of this happening?

Here is the license tag on Danny Garris'
(C5R# V0075) Torch Roadster..
And here's the tag on Al Wallace's
(C5R# W0983) Silver Roadster!
Great minds (and great guys) run in the same channels!
If you'll permit me a personal note or
two: Here's Dave Hill signing the hood
of my 98 Black Targa. And notice John
Cafaro's (C5R# W0555) signature on the
left corner of the hood.

(Jim Minneker's autograph is on the valve
cover)
Here's Jake's picture of me and my new
friend Dave Hill. What a thrill to have
his (and John's and Jim Minneker's)
autographs on my car!
This is the club brick in the walk
below Cafaro's hill. Member bricks
surround this one.
...And here's mine!

Be sure to come to the NCM Celebration in 1999! It'll be great!
